Honors Faculty Andrew Hargrove

Sustainability | Sociology | Climate Action

Dr. Andrew Hargrove is a full-time instructor in the Judy Genshaft Honors College, where they explore the intersection of climate action, environmental sociology, and engaged citizenship. An educator, environmental leader, quantitative methodologist, and social philosopher, Dr. Hargrove empowers students to think critically about the climate crisis — how we got here, what solutions exist, and how individuals can drive systemic change.

Academic Background

Dr. Hargrove earned their PhD in sociology from Stony Brook University (SUNY) in 2021 and a bachelor's degree in psychology from Gonzaga University in 2010. Their academic and teaching approach is transdisciplinary, drawing on insights from the arts, social sciences, business, and physical sciences to explore how social, political, economic, and environmental forces shape global environmental and public health outcomes.

Professor Hargrove's lived experience in five different countries has deepened their understanding of culture, values, and humanity, and they bring this global perspective to both their teaching and research.

Dr. Hargrove's classes emphasize experiential learning, systems thinking, and collaborative problem-solving. They challenge students to interrogate the world around them and embrace their roles as active participants in creating sustainable futures.

Professor Hargrove leads many of the the sustainable futures initiatives around the Judy Genshaft Honors College, which support student engagement, research, and community partnerships focused on sustainability across the Tampa Bay region.
