Two USF faculty named Highly Cited Researchers

Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, those included on the annual Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers™ list are among the top 0.1% in the world. Each researcher selected has authored multiple Highly Cited Papers which rank in the top 1% by citations for their field(s) and publication year in the Web of Science™ over the past decade.

Two USF faculty were named to the 2023 list released today: Faizan Ali in the School of Hospitality and Tourism, Muma College of Business; and Fred Mannering in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, College of Engineering.

David Pendlebury, Head of Research Analysis at the Institute for Scientific Information at Clarivate said: “The Highly Cited Researchers list identifies and celebrates exceptional individual researchers at the University of South Florida whose significant and broad influence in their fields translates to impact in their research community and innovations that make the world healthier, more sustainable and more secure. Their contributions resonate far beyond their individual achievements, strengthening the foundation of excellence and innovation in research.”

Dr. Ali is an Associate Professor in the Muma College of Business, School of Hospitality and Tourism, at the USF Sarasota-Manatee campus. Dr. Mannering is currently a Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering in the College of Engineering and Executive Director of the Center for Urban Transportation Research (CUTR). His research interests are in the application of econometric and statistical methods to a variety of engineering problems, highway safety, transportation economics, automobile demand, and travel behavior. Dr. Mannering has published 170 refereed articles and two widely adopted textbooks: Principles of Highway Engineering and Traffic Analysis (now in its 7th edition), and Statistical and Econometric Methods for Transportation Data Analysis (now in its 3rd edition). His work has been cited more than 35,000 times (Google Scholar).

Since 2001, the Highly Cited Researchers™ list has identified global research scientists and social scientists who have demonstrated significant and broad influence in their field(s) of research. However, citation activity is not the sole selection indicator. A preliminary list based on citation activity is then refined using qualitative analysis and expert judgement. Of the world’s scientists and social scientists, Highly Cited Researchers™ truly are one in 1,000.
