(Welcome in Norwegian)
My name is Hege Riise. I am a licensed psychologist at the Counseling Center, and look forward to getting to know you and be part of your journey as you figure out who you are and want to be. I have chosen to work in college counseling because I enjoy working with the diversity students bring. I also view the work as a privilege, finding a lot of fulfillment in being allowed to support you during your time in college. A little about me: I grew up in Norway and originally came to the US as an exchange student in high school. Later, I decided to come back for college and completed my undergraduate and graduate degrees in Psychology at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. I have had the opportunity to live all over the US since then, and have loved the opportunity to experience different cultures across the country. In addition to traveling, I love reading and role-playing video games because of the stories. For a creative outlet, I spend time on arts and crafts, and recently I started baking.
My approach to therapy focuses on relationships, thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. I prefer to build on your strengths using your values and goals as a guide for the work, and believe that the work we do together is there to prepare you to work on your therapy goals between appointments. In psychology terms, I utilize an interpersonal process approach, integrating interpersonal interventions with CBT and DBT.
Clinical Interests: working with gender, sexual, and relationship minorities / LGBTQ+ students; trauma and recovery; diversity and social justice; women's issues.
Approach to Supervision/Training: I utilize a developmental perspective (IDM) when providing supervision and training, aiming to meet the trainees where they are in their professional journey. The supervision I provide is grounded in professional competencies, and my supervision tends to be process-oriented.
Languages: I am fluent in Norwegian and English.
Affiliations & Roles: At the Counseling Center, I am the Graduate Student Clinician Program Coordinator and Residential Life and Education Liaison. I am also member of the Committee on Diversity & Inclusion and the Brightside Crew. I am a member of the American Psychological Association.
