Internal Awards Program

Mission Statement

The mission of the Internal Awards Program is to foster excellence in research and scholarship by USF faculty and support activities aimed at securing extramural funding. In the allocation of funds across program categories, the highest priority is given to initiatives aimed at funding activities likely to enable leveraging for additional extramural funding and initiatives aimed at scholarly activities for which availability of extramural funding is extremely limited.

The Selection Process for Research/Scholarship Grants: How it Works

The Internal Awards Program is administered through USF Research & Innovation and Sponsored Research. The Call for Proposals requests applications and details the available grant types and time frame of each competitive cycle. The grant cycles are posted simultaneously on the IAP website. A number of USF faculty, across multiple disciplines, serve as proposal reviewers for this peer review process.

Recent evaluations of the research enterprise at USF have highlighted the critical need to increase support, modernize infrastructure, and improve efficiency of operations. In response to these reviews, the USF Research Council has revamped the USFRI Internal Awards program to enhance the growth and productivity throughout the USF research community. The Conference Support Grant remains (renamed to Conference Planning Grant), in addition to three new grants that have been created, with more details to be announced.

IDRA Purpose and Overview

Interdisciplinary Research Awards (IDRAs) are intended to promote creation of multi-PI programs, which involve faculty affiliated with different colleges and/or regional campus, enhance competitiveness for large program-project types of grants, and sustain shared state-of-the-art research infrastructure. These awards are designed to incentivize faculty to lead large-scale innovative interdisciplinary efforts that help enhance the excellence of USF research. Consequently, IDRAs should have quantifiable returns on investment in new grant dollars, increase research productivity, enhance degree programs, and promote attainment of other AAU/state metrics. Each IDRA funding request should be commensurate with the area targeted of research and the funding mechanism(s) to be pursued for sustaining the interdisciplinary program.

See InfoReady for more details.

NOTE: The Faculty International Travel Grant has been discontinued to align more closely with the RCM model. The annual F&A distribution goes to the dean of each college and the dean decides how to further distribute the funds to departments, internal programs, or PIs. As such, several colleges already have established internal award programs that are similar to the mission of the FITG awards.

FITG Final Reports are due within three months of the travel. Internal Award Eligibility in the FITG Grant Guidelines state that an awardee must have submitted final reports for all previous USF Internal Awards.
