CLAM BAYOU - ST. PETERSBURG, FL - The 2018 Spoonbill Bowl was another success. Reigning champion Eastside High School from Gainesville Florida won the 2018 Spoonbill Bowl. The teams from Crystal River, the Academy of Environmental Science's A- team sweeps 2nd place and AES's B-team takes 3rd place. The Sportsmanship award was given to Oviedo High School.  Congratulations to all the participating schools.

Thank you on behalf of Teresa Greely and Angela Lodge for contributing to another successful Spoonbill Bowl Competition. We appreciate every agency or education institution that contributed space, volunteers, financial donations, prizes or complimentary admissions for the teams or volunteers and recruiters to share about college admission and scholarships, with the students. Thank you, Clearwater Marine Aquarium, Eckerd College, FMSEA, FWRI, MOTE Marine Labs, New College, NOAA, St. Petersburg College, USFSP, USGS and the University of Florida. We are extremely grateful for the overwhelming support from the administration, faculty, staff and students from our own College of Marine Science.

A wave of thanks to our 2018  Teams Welcome Dinner, Keynote Speaker, Dr. Xinfing Liang, USF CMS Faculty. Besides informing the audience about a topic of which many aren’t very knowledgeable, “How the Ocean Influences Our Weather”, Dr. Liang taught us all a lesson on the importance of perseverance, by sharing his entire presentation amidst the karaoke partying of the venue’s neighbors.

Below are the final competition results. Pictures are attached for all except the Oviedo High School (Sportsmanship Award Winners), because they had to leave early.

  • Eastside took first place for the second consecutive year.
  • Academy of Environmental Science swept second place, with their A team and third place with their B team.
  • Oviedo High School was voted for this year's Sportsmanship award.
  • Durant High School - winning t-shirt design
