What resources are available for students, faculty, and staff impacted by the fire?
Our people are our highest priority. Resources are available through the university for those in need of support. Students have access to TimelyCare 24/7 as well as in-person counseling services on campus. Faculty and staff can access the Employee Assistance Program. Internally, the college leadership team is working hard to assist those who were impacted.
What buildings were affected by the fire?
The Marine Science Lab at the College of Marine Science on the USF St. Petersburg campus was the sole building affected by the fire. Adjacent buildings including the Knight Oceanographic Research Center, Florida Fish and Wildlife Research Institute, Marine Warehouse, and research vessels operated by the Florida Institute of Oceanography are fully operational.
How were students, faculty and staff impacted?
Fortunately, no one was injured because of the fire. However, roughly 135 faculty, students, and staff from the College of Marine Science and Florida Institute of Oceanography were displaced. The college and university are working with partners to secure facilities for them on and near campus. Accommodations are in place for students who are planning to defend their theses/dissertations and graduate in the upcoming semesters.
What is the status of the Marine Science Lab building? Will the building be rebuilt or replaced?
With salvage and recovery operations now successfully complete, USF is actively prioritizing operational and academic continuity. As these immediate continuity phases stabilize, the university will begin to formulate next steps for the facility's future building layout and design.
How can I help?
Thank you for your consideration. A Marine Science Operating Fund has been set up by the USF Foundation for people interested in making monetary contributions. Additional channels are being considered for the donation of materials such as laptops, monitors, books, and other materials to help students and others in need.
What funds have already been raised to support the recovery effort?
To date, more than $500,000 has been raised through the Marine Science Operating Fund from hundreds of generous donors. These funds will help with the immediate and ongoing needs of our students, staff, and researchers including the purchase of essential instrumentation and research supplies.
What is the status of animals in the Aquarium Lab?
The College of Marine Science maintains organisms for biological studies and follows strict animal care protocols. The Aquarium Lab, which houses animals for research, is located in the Knight Oceanographic Research Center and was unimpacted by the fire.
