USF STARTALK Peer Mentor Program

Dates: July 19 – 31, 2015

Place: Patel Center at the University of South Florida, 4202 E. Fowler Avenue, Tampa, FL 33620

Eligibility: High school students who are native speakers of Mandarin Chinese with advanced- levels of reading and writing.
Salary: $800 for the duration of the program for approximately 96 hours of work (9 am to 5 pm). Lunch will be provided daily. Program shirts and a Certificate of completion will also be provided.

Description:
The USF STARTALK Peer Mentors will be assigned a small group of students ranging in Chinese proficiency. The Peer Mentors will assist students with class preparation through pronunciation drills, language exercises, and other activities assigned by program staff as well as participate in the cultural activities with the students.

Peer Mentors must be available every day for the entirety of the program and are required to participate in a pre-camp training session.

All accepted participants must sign and abide by the USF STARTALK Code of Conduct, Media Release Form, Medical Release Form, and Forms required by STARTALK Central.

What are the requirements?
You must be a rising 9th to 12th grader in high school and a native speaker of Mandarin Chinese with advanced-levels of reading and writing. An interview will be set up in May for selection and once selected, you must pass a background check.
You are responsible for your transportation to and from campus from home.

Could I use my hours worked toward community service?
Hours may also be counted towards community service depending on your school or organization's requirements.

What if I can only work on the week days but not on the weekends?
We are only looking for Peer Mentors who can commit to working every day of the program including weekends.

How will I know how to help a student learn Chinese?
Participating Peer Mentors will participate in a pre-program training session and will be brief daily by the teaching staff. The Program Director will also review the topics with the Peer Mentors which the students need to practice. A copy of lesson plans and vocabulary will be provided for you to reference. And you can help students by speaking exclusively in Chinese inside and outside of the classroom.

When and how will I get paid?
Upon the completion of the program, you will receive a direct deposit into your bank account. Please allow some time for processing.
