Florida Flood Hub for Applied Research and Innovation

Overview

The Florida Flood Hub for Applied Research and Innovation is focused on some of the state’s most pressing environmental challenges. Our goal is to improve flood forecasting and inform science-based policy, planning, and management.

The Flood Hub is a first in Florida. Established by the state and based at the University of South Florida College of Marine Science, we bridge the gap between scientists, policymakers, practitioners, and the public to help communities mitigate and adapt to flooding risks. Our interest is resilience — the ability of communities to prepare for, withstand, and rebound from flood events and other natural hazards. By assembling subject matter experts from across disciplines, the Flood Hub advances our understanding of and ability to forecast flooding due to sea level rise, high tides, storm surge, and changes in rainfall patterns.

Key to this effort is conveying information in ways that are accessible and compelling to scientists and non-scientists alike. Working in concert with the Resilient Florida Program, the Flood Hub supports statewide efforts to protect people, businesses, natural resources, and coastal infrastructure. Our open-source products and services inform vulnerability assessments, risk analyses, economic investments, and strategies to help communities mitigate and adapt to flood-related hazards.
