One of the least-predictable threats to maritime safety are “rogue” waves. These consist of a single or small set of large waves that appear suddenly, damaging and even sinking ships. CMPS is studying rogue waves worldwide by combining a large variety of wave-buoy data, as well as data from shipping accidents believed to have happened due to rogue waves and comparing with modeled-based reanalysis data. We are creating a unique rogue wave occurrence map to provide the maritime industry suggestions of shipping routes that are more dangerous and should be modified, and developing warnings about probable circumstances under which this phenomenon can occur.
