Two USF Students Named 2026 Goldwater Scholars
University of South Florida third-year students Caleb Fernandes and Diya Upadhyaya have been awarded the nation’s highest honor for undergraduate STEM research, the Goldwater Scholarship. Continuing its remarkable research growth, USF has now produced at least one Goldwater Scholar every year since 2018.

From Dual Undergrad Degrees to Doctoral Candidate
Born and raised in Tampa, Fla, as the youngest of five children and a first-generation college student, USF’s College of Public Health (COPH) alumna Mae Horne grew up surrounded by public service. Her mother and stepfather worked as ER nurses, and her father served as a lieutenant firefighter and paramedic. When the COVID-19 pandemic placed all three on the frontlines, her appreciation for health care and public health workers deepened, along with her passion for emerging infectious diseases.

USF Helping to Restore Tampa Bay’s Oyster Populations by 3D-Printing Habitats
Along the seawall of Bayboro Harbor, a group of USF students and professors recently installed 3D-printed habitats they hope will soon house oysters that can filter thousands of gallons of water per day and improve both water quality and ecosystem health.

Screenwriter Brian Edgar visited the USF Judy Genshaft Honors College to share insights from the film and publishing industries, guiding students through the process of refining story ideas and crafting compelling loglines. Students in the course, Unlocking the Secrets of Ghostwriting: The Art of Storytelling through a Collaborative Literary Process, explored industry techniques for organizing narratives, received feedback on their concepts, and learned how professional writers develop ideas into stories.
