Voter Education

Voter Education Overview

In an election year as important as 2020, it is time to take your voter education seriously. University of South Florida Student Government has put together a guide to voting to assist you in your efforts to be a well-informed voter!

What to expect in our Voter’s Education Guide:

  • Deadlines are challenging but important to keep track of. We have compiled a list of the most important dates to remember so you do not miss a thing.
  • If you are not already registered to vote we have included the link to our partnership with TurboVote where you can register to vote and receive important election information.
  • Also listed are helpful links to check your voter registration status and a precinct finder.
  • You can learn more about what it means that Florida is a closed primary state and how to adjust your voting habits to accommodate for that.
  • The numerous ways to vote have been included in detail so that you can tailor your voting experience to fit your needs whether it is through the mail, early, or election day voting!
  • Additionally, if you live on campus you can find all the necessary information on how to register to vote with your physical residence hall address and include your on-campus mailing address so you still receive your mail.

Closed Primaries in Florida

Florida is a closed primary election state. To vote in a primary election, specifically for the presidential race, in Florida you must be a registered Florida voter with a political party affiliation. Your political party affiliation allows you to vote in either the Republican Primary Election or the Democratic Primary Election. During the August primary, you may vote for local races using a non-partisan ballot.

Inform Your Vote

We encourage students to use Ballotpedia to research candidates for upcoming elections. Ballotpedia is a nonprofit organization dedicated to informing people about politics and is committed to neutrality in their content. The organization is completely funded by private donations and does not receive government funding.

Disclaimer: USF Student Government does not endorse any language that suggests favor towards one candidate or another.

Live on Campus?

Can I register to vote as a student living on campus?

Yes! You have the right to register to vote at your school address – this includes a residence hall room. Any student living in a residence hall is entitled to the same rights as any other student. To imply otherwise is illegal.

What address should I use if I live on campus?

In order to register to vote on campus, you must register with your residence hall’s physical address, not the university’s address. In addition, there is a place on the voter registration form to include a mailing address so that you can receive your mail to your student address.
